I'd caution those on the left trying to mock the hypocrisy of those on the right that tend to cast wide nets when describing Islam and Terrorism by casting your own wide nets in describing right wing ideologies and terrorism now. The randomness of it and the stories about who they spared and why was this new thing that has obviously hit home with many mentally disturbed individuals where being a mass shooter is cooler or even sexier in their minds than being a serial killer who chops people up. There were mass shootings before them but they were the first ones given some dark mysterious trench coat mafia misunderstood outsider legacy. They entered a new pyscho path archetype into the mass cultural zeitgeist really. I think a lot of the mass shooting culture can be traced back to how the columbine kids were portrayed after they did what they did.
